La
Corbière is at the southwestern tip of Jersey.
The bays at inshore waters of
Jersey are notoriously rocky, and one particularly dangerous outcrop is where
the Atlantic waters meet the seas between Jersey and France.
This wild,
desolate spot has been the scene of may a shipwreck (the first recorded was that
of a Spanish galleon in 1495) A concrete lighthouse was built in 1885, though
tragedies do still happen; notably so when a Sark-bound French catamaran struck
a rock in 1995 and over 300 lost their lives.
Today a causeway links the
lihghthouse to the mainland- this is covered at high water.
